Abstract

Miracles in the life of Pythagoras of Samos

The following synopsis deals with a dissertation project that examines the miraculous aspects in the life of Pythagoras of Samos. Based on the youngest sources from late antiquity, we will analyze recurring motives and stereotypes that show Pythagoras as a performer of miracles. Those miracle stories will be compared both with older sources concerning Pythagoras and with texts about other figures in Graeco-Roman antiquity so that the miraculous aspects can be interpreted in a wider context.
